Trio’s Alexandria has been a familiar stop for local diners, but sometimes a return visit brings something new to the table. This time, that something was a Philly cheesesteak I first spotted on the restaurant’s Facebook page.
The sandwich is currently an off-menu item, which makes it feel like you are part of a secret underground dining club. Piled high with thick slices of tender steak, melted provolone cheese, and onions on a soft roll, it is a hearty option for anyone looking for something beyond the regular menu.
I ordered one to bring home to Dad—I finally inherited his love of Philly cheesesteaks—and one to enjoy in the restaurant. Minus the onions, of course. I also opted for a side of creamy mashed potatoes instead of the traditional fries or onion rings.
While the Philly cheesesteak was the reason for my visit, Trio’s regular menu still offers plenty of choices, including burgers, chicken sandwiches, wraps, fried shrimp, pasta dishes, salads and appetizers. Daily lunch specials also rotate throughout the week, including Saturday’s Boom Shakalaka Po-Boy. Shakalaka is their homemade sauce and is as much fun to say as it is to eat!
My very first visit to Trio’s was right after I moved back home. It was a surprise birthday party for my friend Mary. What I noticed most was how our server seamlessly became party guest as well. It was the perfect atmosphere to meet new people and make new friends. In fact, one of those new friends told an editor friend about my writing, which led to a phone call that jump-started my travel writing career.
Trio’s was forever woven into my history after that.
I’ve been back a few times—for lunch, for dinner, and once, for a Christmas brunch with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Exceptional service, good food, and always a great time.
I went home with half a sandwich—leftovers for tomorrow—and a full belly. Which was kinda sad because the Turtle Cheesecake on the dessert menu had been whispering my name. Next time, Trio’s!
Trio’s is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. It is closed Sunday and Monday.
They are located at 94 Versailles Avenue, Suite A, Alexandria and can be reached at 318-625-7336.
