MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS: DONE!

By Jeanni Ritchie

Have you ever reached that point where you were just DONE? Whether with a person, situation, or life itself, that feeling of utter exasperation can wreak havoc on your mental health.

I remember listening to The Band Perry’s Done! on repeat in 2013. It would be another 10 years before I put actions to the lyrics, “Bottle up the ashes, smash the urn. I’m through…with you…”

As I proverbially cleaned house in my life, I hit a few snags. Completely changing your life—even if it’s all for the best—often comes with painful excavations. So many times I was just DONE.

Done with heartache. Done with trying. Done with taking two steps forward, then three steps back. There’s nothing worse than being done with your own life.

I had to learn how to keep going when everything in me just wanted to quit.

The first thing I learned was that being done with a situation didn’t mean I had to be done with life. Sometimes the very things we’re holding on to are the things keeping us from moving forward. Letting go isn’t always giving up. Sometimes it’s the first step toward healing.

I also had to learn that I couldn’t fix everything at once. When life feels overwhelming, even the simplest tasks can seem impossible. Instead of focusing on everything that needed to change, I began concentrating on what I could do that day. Sometimes that meant taking a significant step forward. Other times, simply getting out of bed and facing another day was enough.

Another important lesson was learning to recognize the difference between quitting and setting boundaries. I didn’t have to keep participating in situations that were destroying my peace. I could love people without allowing them unlimited access to my life. I could forgive without returning to the same circumstances that had caused the pain.

And I had to stop measuring my progress by my setbacks.

Healing isn’t linear. There will be days when you feel like you’ve conquered the world and others when you wonder if you’ve made any progress at all. A difficult day doesn’t erase the work you’ve already done. Neither does a difficult week.

Perhaps one of the hardest lessons was learning that I didn’t have to carry everything alone. Whether through trusted friends, family, counseling, or prayer, reaching out for support isn’t a sign of weakness. Sometimes we need someone to remind us of our strength when we’ve temporarily forgotten it ourselves.

If you’re feeling DONE, there are a few things you can do right now.

Give yourself permission to rest without abandoning your goals. Identify what is within your control and release what isn’t. Set boundaries where they’re needed. Break overwhelming problems into manageable steps. Reach out to someone you trust instead of withdrawing into yourself.

Most importantly, remember that you don’t have to figure out the rest of your life today.

Every now and then, I’ll still have a day when I want to throw my hands in the air and declare that I’m DONE. But I’ve learned that frustration is a feeling, not a final destination.
