They may call themselves The Weak Links, but there was nothing weak about the music as the local band entertained visitors during Fall ArtWalk in downtown Alexandria on Friday, October 16.
Performing a mixture of classic rock and country favorites, the group brought familiar songs, lively entertainment and a little line dancing to the community celebration hosted by the Arts Council of Central Louisiana.
But what makes The Weak Links particularly special is the family connection among its members.
“We are The Weak Links! Just dads with their kids rocking out country and classic rock hits,” explained band member Grover “Bubba” Warren.
The band features Grae McCullough and his son Leland, Warren and his daughter Ava and son Max, along with bassist Kody Simmons.
One of the most impressive aspects of the performance was watching the younger musicians demonstrate their versatility. Both Max Warren and Leland McCullough switched between drums and keyboards, showcasing their musical talents on multiple instruments.
Meanwhile, their fathers traded lead vocal duties, with Grae McCullough handling the classic rock favorites and Warren, sporting his cowboy hat, taking the lead on the country selections.
During the band’s first set, audiences enjoyed familiar tunes including Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl,” Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’,” Darius Rucker’s version of “Wagon Wheel” and Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll.”
There was even some line dancing as audience members joined in the fun.
The Weak Links returned for a second performance later in the evening. Videos shared by the band featured additional favorites, including the Eagles’ “Hotel California,” Brooks & Dunn’s “Neon Moon” and Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition,” demonstrating the variety of musical styles in their repertoire.
From classic rock anthems to country sing-alongs, the group offers music that appeals to multiple generations, much like the families performing it.
For Warren and his fellow musicians, the evening was an opportunity to share their love of music with the Central Louisiana community while participating in one of downtown Alexandria’s signature arts celebrations.
