VICTORY BELLES PRESENT: A SALUTE TO HOPE

BY Jeanni Ritchie

When I first heard the title A Salute to Hope, I assumed the production focused on encouragement and optimism during difficult times.

Technically, I wasn’t wrong.

What I didn’t realize until the show began was that “Hope” wasn’t simply referring to the idea of hope itself. It was also a tribute to Bob Hope, whose performances and support of American troops made him one of the most recognizable entertainers of his era.

Presented by the Victory Belles at BB’s Stage Door Canteen inside The National WWII Museum, the production blends music, history, patriotism, and storytelling in a way that feels both educational and entertaining.

With dazzling costumes, vintage choreography, rich three-part harmonies, and audience interaction, the Victory Belles keep the spirit of 1940s-era entertainment alive while honoring the servicemen and women who lived through World War II and the generations that followed.

Throughout the performance, archival footage and references to Bob Hope helped connect audiences with an entertainer whose commitment to American troops spanned nearly five decades through USO tours and military performances around the world.

The Victory Belles themselves continue that tradition today through performances for veterans, active-duty military members, patriotic events, and audiences across the country.

Some of the most emotional moments came not from the stage itself, but from the audience.

During the musical salute honoring each branch of the military, veterans and service members throughout the room were recognized as they stood proudly to their service song.

Two men were called by name and applauded as their service in World War II was recognized. History suddenly wasn’t sitting on a stage; it was sitting among us.

That’s part of what makes A Salute to Hope so memorable.

The production entertains, but it also serves as a reminder that music has long been tied to comfort, morale, patriotism, and connection during difficult times in American history.

Long after the final note faded, the feeling inside the room lingered. In that moment, patriotism felt less like a slogan and more like shared gratitude—for the sacrifices, resilience, and stories that helped shape America long before America250 celebrations began.
