Have you ever had rolled ice cream? Have you ever rolled your own?!
Rolled ice cream, also known as Thai stir-fried ice cream, is a frozen dessert made by pouring a liquid base (milk, cream, sugar) onto an extremely cold metal plate, mixing in ingredients like fruit or cookies, and then scraping and rolling the mixture into tight spirals. This process creates smooth, semi-solid ice cream rolls that are served upright in a cup with toppings.
I learned the art of rolling ice cream — along with its history — at an ice cream-making class while on a travel assignment to the Nashville Farmer’s Market. I haven’t seen rolled ice cream since.
Until I arrived at Curled Crème in DeRidder, that is!
Situated on the town square, the popular hub was a Saturday destination for families, shoppers, couples, and solo adventurers like me.
I decided to do a “Create Your Own.” The steps were simple: choose your size, choose your base, choose your mix-ins, and choose your drizzle. I went with a regular chocolate base with cookie dough, brownie pieces, and caramel drizzle.
It was delicious!
Beyond their signature rolled ice cream creations, Curled Crème Co. also offers shakes, malts, and classic ice cream floats. Coffee lovers can order hot drinks like coffee, Americanos, lattes, macchiatos, espresso shots, or hot chocolate, with flavor options such as caramel, vanilla, salted caramel, coconut, lavender, maple, and sugar-free caramel.
Their specialty drinks also include frappes and affogatos, along with Frosty Top favorites like root beer, Coke, Orange Crush, and Dr Pepper floats.
Sometimes a simple dessert stop is all it takes to turn an ordinary afternoon into a good memory.
Curled Crème Co. is located at 115 W. 1st Street in DeRidder. Hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 2 PM–8 PM and Friday through Saturday from 12 PM–9 PM. The shop is closed Sunday and Monday. For more information, call 337-343-1831.
