Sometimes you just got to get a pizza!
Despite the fact that I’d brought enough food for a month during my two-week Leesville stay, I found myself unable to work another minute without a slice of pizza. A quick search of nearby pizzerias — and a glance at the ratings — led me to Gilbert’s Louisiana Pizza House.
I called and ordered a medium sausage and pepperoni pizza. With extra cheese. I’d been subsisting on crackers and fruit — I told myself I needed the extra protein. 🙂
Y’all. First of all, let’s skip the rest of the review and talk about that pizza first. It was amazing! Hot, cheesy, flavorful… there is a reason it has so many stars. On top of that, it took me 15 minutes to get it back home and it was still delicious. I could end this review here with one word: Go!
But the restaurant was too cool not to tell you about the rest!
The first thing I noticed was a kid playing the Ms. Pac-Man machine. That was my game! I could get past Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man meeting, marrying, and having a baby before I ever lost my first life!
The next thing I noticed was the stack of albums next to the front register. A turntable sat next to it, with customers able to play DJ. I saw Journey, Eagles, and Billy Joel.
Ms. Pac-Man and classic rock? This was a Gen X playground, for sure. Had I not been mid-chapter during my pizza run I might’ve hung out and ate my pizza in the restaurant. Maybe next time. The vibe was cool!
Other items on the menu include stromboli, pasta dishes like chicken alfredo or baked spaghetti, and several poboys including grilled shrimp, roast beef, turkey, and the house favorite “Gilbert’s Special” piled high with turkey, roast beef, and ham. There are also lighter options like spinach and house salads, along with classic sides such as buffalo wings, garlic bread, mozzarella bread, and oven-baked fries.
One thing locals appreciate is the value. Weekly specials pop up throughout the week, including a Tuesday deal featuring two one-topping medium pizzas for $8.99 each — a steal for pizza this good.
