FAMILY FUN AT WAGON MASTER IN LEESVILLE

By Jeanni Ritchie

I only had one planned restaurant on my to-do list before I spent two weeks in Leesville: Wagon Master.

Everyone I knew raved about it.

My parents were coming to visit and take me to dinner, as well as to tour the plantation home where I’d been staying as a writer-in-residence.

I might’ve been a little mathematically-inclined to save my Wagon Master trip for their visit, but I also knew Dad would really enjoy the food too.

I was right — we loved our meals!

He’d ordered a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich — something I know I’ll be back for myself. The bread was soft and fresh, the steak tender and juicy, and the cheese perfectly melted. In case you’re wondering if that’s his report, no it is not. Of course I tasted it. It looked amazing! But, for the record, he echoed my sentiments.

I’d ordered the sirloin tips, with loaded mashed potatoes. The steak was perfectly seasoned, cooked just right, and tender. Mom ordered a hamburger and fries, and it must have been good because by the time she got her usual to-go box, there was nothing left to go!

But dare I say the star of our table was the time-traveling rolls. You know, the ones that take you right back to elementary school? Those mile-high yeast rolls were a hot commodity on lunch trays. One roll could get you an extra milk and a dessert, if you were willing to give yours up. I was not.

But at Wagon Master, you don’t have to trade anything to get basket after basket of the piping hot yeast rolls, with warm cinnamon (or plain) butter. I personally think calories from nostalgic food items should not count!

Other menu items include ribs, steak combos, shrimp, catfish, crawfish étouffée, tuna steak, and Cajun combos. Hearty salads and pasta dishes are available, along with starters like fried pickles, crawfish tails, jalapeños, egg rolls, buffalo wings, loaded fries and bacon-wrapped shrimp.

Kids menu items include sirloin tips, pepperoni pizza, mac-n-cheese, hamburger or cheeseburger, southern fried fish, chicken nuggets, and corndogs, each served with fries and a drink.

Whether you’re with a group of friends, your family, or a date, Wagon Master is the perfect atmosphere for good food, great service, and fun memories.
