NATIONAL CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE DAY

by Jeanni Ritchie

“Ness-lay Toolhauser,” Phoebe Buffay tells Monica on Friends when explaining who gave her grandmother the top-secret chocolate chip recipe that had been handed down to her. Monica had made almost two dozen batches trying to recreate the elusive recipe.

“Nestle Tollhouse?!” Monica demanded, Americanizing the name Phoebe had put a French spin to. “I cannot believe that I just spent the last two days trying to figure out that recipe and it was in my cupboard the whole time!”

That yellow bag of chocolate chips is in cupboards all over the country, and for good reason! I’ve tried several homemade recipes, as well as bought frozen and refrigerated cookie dough, and I’ve never found one that tastes as good as the one made using that “secret” recipe!

One of my favorite desserts ever is to take a spoonful of that chocolate chip cookie dough (raw eggs included!) and put it on top of a fresh-from-the-oven baked chocolate chip cookie.

Now that’s a way to celebrate National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day!

Necessity is the mother of invention and legend has it that Ruth Graves Wakefield ran out of baker’s chocolate in 1938 to make a batch of butter cookies for her Toll House restaurant in Massachusetts. Instead, she added chopped pieces of a semi-sweet chocolate bar, hoping it would melt and mix into the dough. To her surprise, the chocolate retained its shape, giving birth to the first chocolate chip cookie. (Scroll to the end for the classic Nestle Tollhouse recipe)

Celebrate #NationalChocolateChipCookie Day by making a batch using your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe or bakery-hopping across Central Louisiana for the perfect one.
