In celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Symphony presented Beethoven and Blue Jeans: Celebrating America 250, a program that paired classical masterworks with iconic American compositions in a spirited, accessible concert experience.
The evening opened with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3, a dramatic and emotionally rich piece that set a powerful tone. From there, the orchestra moved into George Gershwin’s Concerto in F, performed by guest pianist Spencer Myer, whose interpretation highlighted the work’s distinctive blend of classical form and jazz influence.
Following intermission, the program shifted fully into American repertoire. Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man delivered its signature boldness and clarity, while Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to Candide added a lively, energetic contrast. Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings provided a moment of reflection, its sustained intensity and emotional depth offering one of the evening’s most moving passages.
The concert concluded with James Beckel’s Liberty for All, a powerful contemporary work incorporating spoken excerpts from the Declaration of Independence and notable speeches by American leaders. Gulfport Mayor Hugh Keating served as narrator, guiding the audience through the text and reinforcing the concert’s central theme of national identity and shared history.
Under the direction of Dr. Peter Rubardt, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Symphony delivered a cohesive program that balanced European tradition with American innovation. The result was a concert that not only showcased technical excellence, but also captured the spirit, complexity, and enduring voice of American music.
As part of the broader America 250 celebration, Beethoven and Blue Jeans offered a fitting tribute—one that honored the past while looking ahead to the nation’s next chapter.
