DELISH OPENS A NEW LOCATION IN CENLA

By Jeanni Ritchie

I finally got to check out Delish on my way home from Baton Rouge earlier this week. I’d had their catering a few times at events, but I was excitedly waiting for their new storefront to open. It opened April 9th in the Common Point Shopping Center.

Some may know it as the former Quebedeaux’s building. But many will remember it as the old Holsum Bakery… over by the old Red Kettle.

You know you’ve gotten old when your directions include at least three “turn by the old…” statements!

I’d arrived hungry and Delish did not disappoint. It was a soul food cafeteria-style set-up, serving hot plates as fast as the food came out of the kitchen. It was Wednesday—$10 day, something I pleasantly discovered at the register—and I’d opted for the baked chicken.

One thing that makes Delish stand out is its rotating daily menu. Each day of the week features a different lineup of entrées, but the schedule stays consistent—so once you find your favorite, you know exactly when to come back for it.

Monday

Red beans & rice

Smothered okra & rice (served with fried chicken & cornbread)

Hamburger steak

Tuesday

Beef tips

Meatloaf

Wednesday

Baked chicken

Pork neckbones

Country fried steak

Thursday (Turkey Wing Thursday)

Turkey wing plate (served with rice or cornbread dressing)

Friday

Fried catfish

Baked catfish

Crawfish étouffée

Shrimp pasta

No matter the day, the sides remain a constant—and they’re the kind you grew up loving: mac & cheese, yams, green beans, cabbage, corn, black-eyed peas, rice dressing, and potato salad. You get two with each plate.

Most of these entrees also come with rice or mashed potatoes, and standing in line I changed my mind no less than 50 times. I’d finally decided on mashed potatoes when the person in front of me ordered rice and gravy and it just looked too good to pass up.

In fact, it looked so good that I dug in before I remembered to take a picture! Fortunately someone let me snap a pic of their pork neckbones.

The sides had posed another dilemma. My first choice was corn and mac & cheese, but yeah… all yellow isn’t supposed to be that good for you. Green beans and yams would probably be healthier, I thought. (Standing in line gives you plenty of time to examine your life choices!)

Ultimately I compromised with myself—mac & cheese and green beans—and promptly rewarded myself for my healthy-ish choice by saying yes to the optional cornbread.

Desserts keep it classic and comforting with options like cake and banana pudding, and drinks include everything from cokes and lemonade to a good old cup of Kool-Aid. I skipped dessert and ordered water, silently cursing the apple-shaped genes I’d been dealt.

I will be back—and maybe even on a day with less willpower because that banana pudding looked good. I also want to try Sunday’s pork steak. Delish is open on the first and third Sunday of each month, also serving oxtails and baked chicken.

The new location has given owner Danielle even more space for her growing dine-in, drive-thru, and catering business. A proven locally owned and operated Cenla business, Delish is here to stay.

Located at 3710 South MacArthur Drive in Alexandria, Delish can be reached at (318) 787-9047. The restaurant is open Monday through Friday from 11 AM to 3 PM, closed on Saturdays, and open on the first and third Sundays of each month from 11 AM to 3 PM.
