Jim Keller is not a rookie.
He has been a viable and significant player on the music scene for the better part of forty-something years. Originally known as one-half of Tommy Tutone, Keller co-wrote the memorable hit, “867-5309 (Jenny).” He also set me up on a blind date with Demi Moore before she was Demi Moore.
For the past quarter-century, he has headed the publishing company for the music of renowned neo-classical composer, Philip Glass. He has served as manager for Rufus Wainwright, hooking Wainwright up with noted producer, Mitchell Froom (Crowded House, Randy Newman, Paul McCartney, and Los Lobos, among many others) for his most recent album.
During the past dozen years, Keller has re-established himself as a respected solo artist, releasing a handful of terrific and critically acclaimed CDs. His connection with the aforementioned Froom, led to Mitchell producing Jim’s most recent effort, “By No Means.”
Jim wrote this collection of songs at home, on his acoustic guitar, while singing into his phone. Rather than taking them into a full-blown production of loud rock singing and playing, Froom encouraged Keller to keep the subtleness of the demos with a dose of tasteful embellishment.
They brought in a roomful of A-list players, including David Hildalgo (Los Lobos, Latin Playboys), Byron Isaacs (Lumineers, Ollabelle), bassist extraordinaire Bob Glaub (Linda Ronstadt, Warren Zevon, John Lennon), and drummer Michael Urbano (Smash Mouth, Third Eye Blind, Sheryl Crow).
The result is a sterling collection of stripped-down tracks that feature world class playing along with Jim’s mellifluous low-end voice.
Jim Keller is a seasoned veteran, a good guy, and my friend.
