In 2006, Rodney Atkins had a song titled “If You’re Going Through Hell” that has served as an anthem for me lately.
If you’re goin’ through hell keep on going
Don’t slow down…if you’re scared don’t show it…
Too many times in life I grew weary and decided to rest right there in the middle of it. Hell is not the place to recline and slide your slippers on.
Whatever it is that you are facing, whether it’s grief or a character assassination by others, you keep going. You keep one foot in front of the other, rebuking thoughts of retaliation or self-harm or regret or guilt or any of the other fiery darts thrown at you in the darkness. You keep your eyes trained on Christ remembering that it is merely a thrill ride at Six Flags, one that may be scary for a moment but you are strapped in with the seat belt of the Holy Spirit and it will end eventually.
If you’re going through hell, keep moving. The devil WILL know you’re there but so does God.
