It is often said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I would agree, however, with one small caveat: Saturday and Sunday brunches are the most important meals of the week! There’s just something extremely satisfying about stumbling into the Bentley Room, still in a fog from the previous night of shenanigans, only to begin again with more day drinking.
It’s still early on this Sunday morning, around 9:30ish, however, the crowd is already rolling in and the kitchen is busy. Luckily, for me, a plate of Chicken and Waffles has arrived not too long after I take my seat. Chicken and waffles is never a bad choice when you’re looking to shake back from the night before or preparing for heavy consumption of libations for the day. This rendition features “the filet of the chicken breast,” battered and seasoned just right chicken tenders, with a light and fluffy waffle.
As we finish off the first round of mimosas, the dining room has become a little more crowded, and even more breakfast cocktails and steaming plates are emerging from the kitchen.
Next up we’re treated to an Eggs Benedict sampler featuring four different variations of this popular breakfast offering. These “build your own” options are far from the traditional Eggs Benedict you are used to. How about a Crab Cake Benedict with fried crab cake, poached egg and a hot sauce Hollandaise.
After a quick clockwise turn of the sampler platter, I land on the Brisket on a Biscuit; that’s smoked brisket on a biscuit, underneath a poached egg swimming in red eye gravy. Yes, it is as delicious as it sounds and, yes, you could easily crawl back into bed after finishing that one alone … but there’s more.
The Cajun Benedict with fried green tomatoes, poached egg, lump crab meat and that good ol’ hot sauce Hollandaise is wow!
Last, but certainly not the least, there’s Shrimp Monica, a biscuit topped with grilled gulf shrimp, Monica Sauce and a poached egg. Adding a bowl of smoked gouda grits for good measure and a room upstairs for the rest of the afternoon sounds very appealing right about now.
Another round of mimosas to wash it all down and we have come to the conclusion the Bentley Room is quite possibly Cenla’s best-kept brunch secret.
This isn’t my first time being blessed by Chef Matt’s culinary flare. I also recommend making a lunch reservation at the Bentley Room Monday – Friday, 11am – 2pm. And, dinner is another option to explore, Monday – Saturday, 4pm – 10pm!
