I’d been hearing about Pamela’s Bayou in a Bowl since before I even moved home, but somehow had never tried the down-home cooking everyone raved about. That changed after I left the Taylor Swift album release movie at The Grand Theatre down the street. Pamela’s was the perfect spot to grab a quick, hearty dinner — already prepared and waiting to be plated.
Despite the Friday night temptation of crawfish étouffée, I decided on the smothered chicken over rice. It came with two sides, and though I was tempted to double up on the macaroni and cheese, I went with mac and cheese and green beans. I added a slice of Cajun cornbread on the side, because how could I resist?
It was delicious! I know now why the walls are lined with awards. You can taste the love, the soul, and the comfort of home in every bite. The macaroni and cheese was divine — I should’ve ordered the double batch after all! I even had a bonus slice of lemon cake I hadn’t ordered. Talk about lagniappe! I had enough food for three sittings, and still sent the dog off with leftovers.
The menu has all the Louisiana staples you’d expect: baked chicken, fried fish and shrimp, pork chops, meatloaf, beef stew, and even po’boys stacked with fried shrimp, grilled chicken, or smoky bacon turkey breast. With rotating daily specials, you can get something different every time you walk in — always in generous portions that feel like Sunday supper at grandma’s table.
