ENGAGING WITH OUR COMMUNITY AND PROMOTING LITERACY: RPSB’s SUMMER BUS TOUR

Brought To You By Rapides Parish School Board; Written by Mary Helen Downey

The Rapides Parish School Board and its Literacy Task Force are connecting with the community by visiting parks in Alexandria and Pineville as part of the Literacy Bus Tour this summer.

So far the Literacy Bus has stopped at Kees Park and the City of Alexandria’s Back to School Bash. The task force has distributed over 1,000 books to children and families. Resources have also been provided to help parents prevent the “summer slide”.

The goal of the summer literacy tour is to ensure that parents and families have access to resources and tools to make reading a daily habit.

Outside of the literacy activities, children can enjoy the parks, treats from the Red River Ice Cream Truck, and other local food trucks. The Rapides Parish Library’s Book Mobile is also collaborating with the task force to further allow children opportunities to read this summer.

Superintendent Jeff Powell says, “We want to continue engaging with our families over the summer and meet them where they are. These literacy events will help students get excited and motivated to read!”

The goal of the Rapides Parish School Board is to ensure that all students are achieving at their maximum potential, and the literacy task force hopes to bolster those efforts by connecting with families in a fun, purposeful way.
