GIVE GENEROUSLY—ON PURPOSE AND WITH PURPOSE

By Pastor James Greer

We serve a generous God—One who gave His Son for us and daily gives grace upon grace. As His children, we are called to reflect that same generosity, not just in moments of emotional giving, but in consistent, purposeful generosity.

“But generous people plan to do what is generous, and they stand firm in their generosity.” — Isaiah 32:8 (NLT)

Genuine generosity is not measured by the amount but by the intention. It begins in the heart of someone who trusts God and aligns their life with His Kingdom. In fact, generosity is an act of faith—when we give, we declare with our actions that God is our provider and we trust Him with our future.

Why Does Purpose Matter?

Anyone can give randomly, but generous people plan their generosity. They prioritize giving. They persevere in generosity, even when it’s not easy. Why? Because they understand the purpose behind it.

When we give:

  • We align with God’s heart and economy (Proverbs 11:25).
  • We participate in God’s promises (Luke 6:38).
  • We break the grip of greed (1 Timothy 6:17-18).
  • We store up eternal rewards (Matthew 6:19-20).

We Are Blessed to Be a Blessing

Think about the stories in Scripture:

  • Abraham was blessed so he could bless others (Genesis 12:2-3).
  • The widow at Zarephath gave and saw God provide miraculously (1 Kings 17).
  • The boy with five loaves and two fish gave what little he had—and thousands were fed (John 6).

Their generosity wasn’t an accident. It was intentional, sacrificial, and filled with faith.

What’s Your Giving Plan?

Are you giving with a purpose?

  • Tithe with intentionality. Put God first (Malachi 3:10–11; Deuteronomy 14:23).
  • Give with heart. Wherever your treasure goes, your heart follows (Matthew 6:21).
  • Invest in eternity. Live with an eternal perspective (1 Timothy 6:18-19).

Here’s a declaration you can adopt:
“As I plan my generosity, I’m also planning for God to be generous to me.”

Final Encouragement:

Don’t wait until you “have more” to start giving. If you’re not generous now, you won’t magically become generous later. Start small, but start now. Give generously—on purpose and with purpose—and watch how God blesses you so you can be a blessing to others.
