For me, Christmas in Louisiana has always meant one thing: the Natchitoches Lights. Some of my earliest holiday memories are wrapped up in the glow of those lights along Cane River, and one of the first things I did when I moved back home two years ago was to attend the opening weekend. That year, I got to watch fireworks from my daughter Kaden’s backyard on Cane River, just steps from the magnificent parade, and within earshot of the live bands. I remembered childhoods trips with my parents to experience this winter wonderland.
The Natchitoches Christmas Festival of Lights is more than a holiday event — it’s a magical fairyland that turns this historic town into something straight out of a storybook. From the food (no trip is complete without a Natchitoches meat pie!) to the live music, parades, and fireworks, the whole town shines with joy and tradition.
Festival Highlights
•Over 300,000 lights turn the downtown historic district and Cane River Lake into a sparkling backdrop, flipped on at dusk daily from November 23, 2024, through January 6, 2025.
•The season kicks off with Turn on the Holidays on November 23, featuring the first fireworks of the year.
•Every Saturday night brings fireworks displays that dance across the river.
•December 12–21: The beloved Christmas Tour of Homes opens doors to historic treasures dressed in holiday splendor.
•Throughout the season, families enjoy events like the NSU Christmas Gala, Cookies with Santa, and the Lighted Boat Parade.
Why It’s Special
What sets Natchitoches apart isn’t just the scale of the lights, but the feeling of community and history that fills every corner. This is the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase, and during the holidays it’s also the most magical. Generations of families, mine included, keep returning because the tradition never loses its sparkle.
If you want to experience Louisiana’s Christmas heart, you’ll find it here — in the lights reflecting off Cane River, in the taste of a fresh meat pie, and in the laughter echoing through streets lined with history.
