Tucked into the heart of downtown Alexandria, something special is happening—one poem at a time.
Poetry AEX is a growing local arts initiative dedicated to creating space for poets, artists, and creatives to share their work in a welcoming, community-driven environment. Hosted at Tamp & Grind Coffee, the group’s open mic nights bring together voices from all backgrounds, offering an evening of poetry, music, and connection.
At a recent gathering, I found myself right in the middle of it all—poets to the left of me, artists to the right, and a room full of people who simply showed up to create and be inspired. I even stepped up to the mic myself, joining others who were brave enough to share their words out loud.
That’s the beauty of Poetry AEX. It’s not about perfection—it’s about presence. Whether you’re a seasoned writer or someone scribbling thoughts in a notebook for the first time, there’s space for you here.
Founded by Shelley Jinks Johnson, Poetry AEX continues to evolve, with plans to expand into a podcast and a future print publication featuring local voices. While events are currently held periodically rather than on a fixed schedule, each gathering builds momentum for a growing creative community in Central Louisiana.
April is National Poetry Month, a celebration launched by the Academy of American Poets in 1996 that has grown into the largest literary celebration in the world—marking its 30th anniversary this year. With readings, workshops, and creative initiatives happening across the country, it’s a reminder of the enduring role poetry plays in our culture—and the importance of spaces like this one right here at home.
One of the simplest ways to take part is through Poem in Your Pocket Day, celebrated this year on April 30. The idea is just what it sounds like—carry a favorite poem with you and share it with someone along the way, a small but meaningful way to keep poetry present in everyday life.
In a world that often moves too fast, Poetry AEX offers something different—a chance to slow down, listen, and be heard.
