SOMBREROS

By Jeanni Ritchie

Sombreros is one of Central Louisiana’s most popular Mexican restaurants. It’s easy to understand why.

Not only is the food fresh, group seating available, and open to the after-church crowd on Sunday, the owners and management are invested in the community. I’ve seen their generosity to organizations and individuals, give back programs destined to show their interest in the community they serve.

My parents and I took my great-nephews (their great-grandchildren) for a Sunday dinner after church last month. Three of the boys got chicken tenders, the smartest item a Mexican restaurant can add to their menu, while one decided to embrace the cuisine we’d come for- taco with rice and beans!

I got a fajita chicken chimichanga while Mom and Dad split the Sampler platter. We also nibbled on chips and salsa, their salsa a little on the sweeter side. A full blown sugar addict, I loved it! It’s my new favorite salsa!

We saw a group of several ladies from church in the corner table, their usual Sunday spot! Repeat and regular customers speak louder than a review ever could!

The menu is laden with all of your favorite Mexican dishes: nachos, tacos, quesadillas, chimichangas, southwest eggrolls, cheese sticks, burritos, enchiladas, and soups and salads. The dessert menu includes traditional Mexican desserts like flan and fried ice cream, along with sweet treats like chocolate cake and apple pie.

Even better are the FREE meals. That’s right! Kids eat free during Tuesday’s Family Night. Kids 12 and under eat free (2 kids to each paying adult).

My friend Sue and I used to bring our kids to something similar at an Alexandria Mexican restaurant in the 90’s. Our kids ate free (and then went to a supervised activity area after the meal) while we had a real grown-up people conversation over chips and burritos. It was the highlight of my week!

Sombreros is located at 1730 Metro Drive, Alexandria. Call ahead orders can be placed  at 318-487-0001.

They are open Monday-Thursday 11 AM- 9:30 PM, Friday and Saturday 11 AM- 10 PM, and Sunday 11 AM- 8 PM.
