What better way to start off the new year than the best way to start your day in Cenla? With Shipley’s Do-Nuts!
Shipley’s has been a part of my life since childhood, those glazed and chocolate-iced donuts as embedded in my memory as my Barbies. Their chocolate-filled became my top craving when I was pregnant with my first child, a craving that never quite went away.
I share them now with my grandchildren!
The Pebbles Family, longtime owners of several local Shipley’s, are as committed to their donuts as they are to the community. Photos line the walls of ball teams sponsored by Shipley’s over the years, my own son in one of them. Their philanthropy is extended throughout many organizations and events— their generosity as sweet as their donuts.
In the 90s, they added savory to the menu with kolaches. Ham, sausage, bacon, and cheese—some of the most popular options—are baked into this iconic homemade dough. On the sweet side, they have hot glazed donuts, multiple iced donut flavors, cinnamon twists, and donut holes.
The reason they get my vote for the best donuts in the country? The sugar glaze around the entire donut, even if covered with icing or sprinkles!
I was 13 the first time I noticed a Shipley’s outside of my hometown. I was surprised to learn the chain originated in Houston in 1936, not in Alexandria when I was born! I learned about corporate franchising that day.
Speaking of corporate, we might need to have a little sit-down about your recent change to the chocolate filling! Loyal customers aren’t letting this silently slide by!
