LOU & LAURA’S

By Jeanni Ritchie

Last month was #NationalSandwichMonth so I decided to visit Lou and Laura’s for one of America’s favorite sandwiches, the Philly Cheesesteak!

Recently added to the menu at Lou & Laura’s, it was the perfect place for a working lunch. Lou & Laura’s is known for the po-boys, though I usually order the half chicken. Their chicken is DIVINE!

But this was a sandwich day and my sandwich was big enough for two. Since I’d skipped breakfast though, I ate more than my half. That bread was so soft! I did save some for my canine sister. I was leaving town the next day and knew she’d have to go back to just being a dog while I was away.

I spoil my “sissy.”

While I gave her 1/3 of my sandwich, she got none of the curly fries. The salty, twisted potatoes were cooked in fresh oil and I ate them all!

Besides the Philly Cheesesteak, Lou & Laura’s has other po-boys, dressed and undressed. (I prefer mine naked, meat and cheese only!) There’s ham, fish, shrimp, and cheeseburger. They have actual cheeseburgers too, hamburgers if you leave the cheese off though I’m not sure why you’d do that! They also have a chicken sandwich and pork chop sandwich.

If you don’t want the curly fries, you can order onion rings or potato salad as a side. If you are on a bread fast, you can get a basket instead. Chicken strip, pork chop, fish, shrimp…

Want a hot dog instead? They serve Nathan’s hot dogs, chili cheese optional! We often get family packs of chicken- remember that fresh grease comment? Well, the chicken always tastes like it was fried in a fresh batch of oil just for you! 8-piece, 12-piece, half chicken, single piece…whatever your need, they’ve got an option for you! They even have wing baskets!

It is a family-friendly restaurant and the kids aren’t forgotten. Specially priced kids meals include hot dog basket, chicken leg basket, and chicken tender basket.

Neither are the sweet tooth Sallies like me! Old fashioned ice cream, floats, pecan pies, and homemade cookies are dessert offerings.

It was a great lunch, both the meal and the ambiance. The red and white checkered tablecloth and red booths were stimulating enough to keep me working post-meal instead of falling into a post-meal sleepy slump!

Plus they had my beloved Coke products and kept my cup refilled throughout my visit!
Not that they needed bonus points from me, but they got them with that alone!

Lou & Laura’s is located right off Jackson Street at 1301 Windsor Place, Alexandria. Call ahead orders can be placed at 318-445-2917.

They are open Monday-Friday 10:30 AM- 8 PM and Saturday 10:30 AM- 5 PM!
