If you’ve lived in Central Louisiana long enough, you know Los Portales — more affectionately known as Lo Po — is one of the hottest Mexican restaurants in town. This longtime favorite has earned its reputation with a welcoming atmosphere, colorful plates, and the kind of salsa that keeps you coming back for more. (It even snagged a top award during our family’s unofficial National Salsa Day Competition earlier this year!)
I joined my friends Lonnie and Stephanie for lunch, and as always, the conversation was as good as the food. I ordered the Chicken Fajita Bowl, a simple yet satisfying mix of grilled chicken over rice topped with melted cheese and salsa. It was the perfect portion — flavorful without being heavy — and just the right choice for a midday meal.
The menu at Los Portales is extensive, offering everything from fajitas and enchiladas to burritos, chimichangas, and quesadillas stuffed with beef, chicken, steak, or shrimp. Vegetarian diners can enjoy plates like Vegetarian Fajitas or the Potato Taquitos, while families will appreciate a full kids’ menu with favorites such as chicken tenders, macaroni and cheese, and mini nachos.
A special Lunch Menu is available from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., featuring favorites such as Lunch Fajitas, Speedy Gonzales, and the Burrito Deluxe.
And if you’ve saved room for dessert (or even if you haven’t), Lo Po’s doesn’t disappoint. Their Cheesecake Raspberry Chimichanga and Fried Ice Cream are crowd favorites — both worth the splurge.
