ROBBIE G’s – A Review

by Ronny Green

My latest escapade throughout 318’s dining scene brings me to a familiar establishment with familiar faces where I will be awakening my taste buds with some new flavors. Today I’m at Robbie G’s where, just as I’ve taken my seat after washing my hands, Jasmine has brought my customary Arnold Palmer and a water, however, much to her surprise, I won’t be having my usual catfish and shrimp combo platter, hold the slaw, extra fries. For lunch, I’m trying out some new menu items along with a New Orleans classic that you can indulge in right here on Jackson St.

First up is Robbie’s pirouge pasta. Two pieces of thinly sliced, fried eggplant, shrimp and smoked tasso are tossed in a cajun cream sauce and served over angel hair pasta. This was my first time trying eggplant. Judging by the manner in which I cleaned my plate, this won’t be my last. Next up is a garlic shrimp pasta made with minced garlic, olive oil, more plump gulf shrimp and green onions, also served over angel hair pasta. Last, but certainly not least, is the New Orleans style BBQ shrimp. Half a dozen baseball sized shrimp swimming in a pool of lemon, buttery, garlicky goodness, and don’t worry about getting your hands messy from peeling the shrimp and dipping the French bread in the sauce, no one will judge you for licking your fingers either.

Mr. Aaron has spent 35 years in the kitchen building his reputation through New Orleans and Central Louisiana. He has been perfecting his craft and expounding upon the teachings of his father who once dropped this little gem on him: “If you want to make a good friend, serve them a good meal.” It goes without saying that he has upheld that standard of excellency. Just as Mr. Aaron came out to join me and talk about importing Po Boy bread from New Orleans and how to prepare Steak Diane dinners, an older couple sitting in front of me asked if he was the chef, to which Aaron replied, “only if the food was good..” the gentleman proceeded to compliment Aaron on the meal he and his wife had just finished and continued by telling us they drive in from Clinton, Mississippi twice a year for the last 5 years to visit the dentist and, for lunch, they always stop at Robbie G’s.
