If you’re looking for something fun to do this month, there isn’t a shortage of activities to get you in the spirit of the season. Live programs and events have come back with a bang! Have you seen the local community events calendars? They are stuffed with a millipede’s stockings’ worth of exciting events! You can find book clubs, art classes, computer classes, craft programs, cooking demonstrations, and so much more on our calendar. The Rapides Parish Library staff is especially excited to share our Rapides Reads, Here Come the Bells, and Space Saturday events. Each is a unique celebration of our community, the season, and all your library offers.
The Library will be kicking off December with a celebration of local son Arna Bontemps. This event will be held on December 3rd starting at 6:00 pm at Lagniappe Theatre. Be sure to come in 1930’s Harlem Renaissance era clothing and get ready for a night of Arna Bontemps poetry, dancing and dance lessons provided by the New Orleans Who Dat Steppers as well as tasty Harlem Renaissance-inspired food. If you aren’t familiar, Rapides Reads is an annual program that the Rapides Parish Library hosts to encourage us to read, play, and learn together as a community. This year’s event is certain to be exceptional in all three respects.
Speaking of playing, who wouldn’t want to play a few bells? Get in the holiday spirit with Lady Chops at the Westside Regional Library on December 13th at 6:00 pm. Lady Chops Presents: Here Come the Bells, So Many Bells is a high energy, interactive show for all ages featuring favorite holiday hits! Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Feliz Navidad, Sleigh Ride, Jingle Bells, and of course, Little Drummer Boy (or girl) and more! And yes, there will be a whole lot of sleigh bells involved.
After you play bells with Lady Chops, strap on your moon shoes and get ready to blast back to Westside Regional Library on December 18th at 5:00 pm for Space Saturday! Watch the James Webb Space Telescope launch, enjoy space treats and orange Tang, while you virtually meet an astrophysicist over a live meeting session, and then, participate in a S.T.E.M. rocket building activity.
