Get ready to read, play, and learn during Rapides Reads
by Jennifer Hughes, Rapides Parish Library
It’s alive! It’s alive! Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is the novel choice for Rapides Parish Library’s annual Rapides Reads program. That quote isn’t actually from Mary Shelley’s literary classic but, nevertheless, it will be a good read with a lot of fun events to attend.
To get Rapides Reads started, there will be a kick-off party on September 28th at the Alexandria International Airport on the third floor at 7:00 PM. Partygoers can expect to see people dressed Jane Austen style – like they are from the Regency period, enjoy food from that time period, participate in dance lessons, and see interactive displays about Mary Shelley, her family, her writing, the various versions of the Frankenstein monster and life during the 1800’s. Also, attendees may come in costume and will receive a free copy of the Frankenstein novel.
Let’s read, play, and learn, together as a community!
Read. The literary classic, Frankenstein, is inspired by tragic events that took place in Mary Shelley’s life. You will discover her deep desire to bring loved ones back and much more. The book is accessible on the Libby App, Cloud Library, Tumblebooks, in print at each library location and, of course, you can get a free copy to keep at the kick-off party.
Play. Opportunities to play include the Kick-Off Party on September 28th, the Mary Shelley Tea Party at the Kent Plantation house on October 12th, and the many monster-themed activities at various RPL locations throughout October.
Learn. Visit book discussions, and key-note speaker discussions by Gina Crawford and Dr. Lillian Purdy. Also, don’t miss the intriguing hand-selected art pieces provided by AMoA on display at Main Library that correlate with the novel beautifully.
