Honor is more than showing respect; it is a biblical principle that shapes our hearts, our relationships, and the health of our ministry. When honor is present, unity grows, people flourish, and God is glorified.
It begins with honoring God first. Proverbs 3:9 teaches us to honor the Lord, and Matthew 6:33 reminds us to seek His kingdom first. When God is not first, other areas of life eventually get out of order. But when He has His rightful place, everything else begins to find its proper place.
This is especially important for leaders. Before we lead others, we must allow God to lead us. Ministry is not simply about leading a group, teaching a lesson, or fulfilling a responsibility. It begins with leading our own hearts toward God.
Honor also affects how we treat people. First Peter 2:17 says, “Honor all people.” Every person has value because every person is created in the image of God. Healthy ministry creates an environment where people know they are valued, heard, respected, and cared for.
People tend to grow better in an atmosphere of encouragement and honor than in one dominated by criticism. This does not mean we ignore problems or avoid difficult conversations. Correction is sometimes necessary, but we can correct someone without dishonoring them. Truth and honor can—and should—work together.
We are also called to honor authority. Romans 13:1 reminds us that authority ultimately exists under God’s sovereignty. Our response to authority often reveals something about the condition of our own hearts. An offended or dishonoring spirit can spread quickly, especially among leaders. In contrast, humility and honor help create unity, trust, and stability.
Finally, honor helps build a healthy culture. God says in 1 Samuel 2:30, “Those who honor Me I will honor.” Honor creates an atmosphere where relationships can strengthen, trust can grow, and God’s favor can be experienced.
Healthy ministries and healthy groups do not happen accidentally. They are built intentionally through humility, encouragement, respect, prayer, servant leadership, and honor.
Honor is the seed; blessing is the harvest.
Sometimes the breakthrough we are praying for begins when honor is restored—in our relationship with God, in the way we treat people, and in the way we respond to those God has placed in leadership.
Ask yourself today: Am I helping create a culture of honor wherever God has placed me?
