FIREHOUSE SUBS – A REVIEW

by Ronny Green

Growing up, the sandwich was the first thing I learned how to make in the kitchen. Over the years, I’ve created many different variations from humble beginnings of bologna sandwiches and grilled cheese to BLT’s, turkey salad sandwiches, pork chop sandos, or the simple addition of more sliced deli cuts, cheeses, and layers of bread to hold these stacked triple decker sandwiches. Occasionally, I pack a lunch bag, choosing to go with the more traditional two bread option and a bag of chips. Disappointed with the current options, I had given up on grabbing a sub for lunch when I could “make one better at home.”

Cal Hoge, along with his son, daughter, son-in-law and his crew at Firehouse Subs opened in April of this year and brought with them a renewed excitement for sandwiches in Alexandria. Today I’m having the popular Hook and Ladder with smoked turkey breast, Virginia honey ham and melted Monterey Jack, served “Fully Involved.” Fully Involved, that’s Firehouse lingo for loaded complete with mayo, deli mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion and a kosher dill pickle on the side. The Firehouse Hero comes out smoking next, piled high with USDA Choice roast beef, smoked turkey breast, Virginia honey ham and melted provolone, also served Fully Involved.

You can have your sandwich made hot or cold and what’s a good sandwich without a good bag of chips on the side? Along with the usual offerings, Firehouse Subs also has one of my favs; Miss Vickie’s salt & vinegar, jalapeño and BBQ. After you select your chips, slide down to the sauce bar and take your pick of two or three of the different hot sauces you can choose, ranging from 1-10 with 10 being the hottest. If you really want to kick your lunch break up a notch, try a Firehouse pair. That’s a small sub with a Firehouse chili, loaded potato soup, side salad or the five-cheese mac & cheese. Go for the five cheese mac & cheese trust, me you won’t be disappointed.

Underneath a spectacular painting of the Jackson Street bridge over the Red River, owner Cal Hoge, retired Air Force, explains to me the significance of the A10 fighter jet which he flew that is also depicted in the mural. Along that same wall are firefighter’s protective gear and axes from a local Alexandria fire department, as well as pictures of firemen in action, creating a very unique visual experience inside the restaurant. Lastly, this local firehouse welcomes all first responders for a free drink whenever they visit Firehouse Subs.
