One of TikTok’s newest trends shows women being mindful and demure. A satirical response to the BRAT girl summer of being carefree and bold, completing tasks “very mindful, very demure” was the brainchild of creator Jools Lebron. Women everywhere have recreated videos cooking, cleaning, putting on makeup, dressing, and more with this tongue-in-cheek mindset.
Beneath the parody, however, are shards of truth. Discretion is highly coveted. Modesty is preferred. Manners matter.
While some jump on the trending bandwagon purely for fun, others find the message relevant in today’s culture of brash opulence.
But what does the Bible say about being mindful and demure?
1 Peter 3:3-4 says, “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”
God describes such a mindful, demure woman in Proverbs 31 as well.
Mindfulness encourages us to pay attention to our experiences in the present moment. As Christians, our awareness of the present moment is enriched by knowing that God is always with us.
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him. ~ Psalm 37:7
Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. ~ Ephesians 5:15-17
Being mindful and demure is more than a trend, it’s a commandment from the Lord. We should all jump on the bandwagon.
