Sometimes, the best way to build community is simply by spending the day together.
This Summer, Evergreen Life Services’ Friends and Family Day brought 145 people to the Alexandria Zoo for a day filled with connection, conversation, and shared experiences.
Individuals supported by Evergreen were joined by family members, staff, donors, supporters, and friends from across Alexandria and Pineville, creating a gathering that reflected the strength of an inclusive community.
Guests spent the day riding the train, visiting the animals, feeding the fish, taking photos, and enjoying a picnic with one another. While the zoo offered plenty of excitement, the most meaningful moments came from the friendships that were strengthened and the new connections that were made along the way.
For individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, opportunities to engage in community life are important. Experiences like Friends and Family Day encourage social interaction, foster relationships, and create a sense of belonging. Whether sharing a meal,
exploring a new exhibit, or laughing with friends, each moment helped build confidence and deepen connections within the community.
Across Central Louisiana, Evergreen supports approximately 115 individuals through 15 Community Homes, Supported Independent Living Services, a Day Program, and Supported Employment. These programs help individuals develop skills, pursue meaningful employment, make choices about their lives, and participate fully in their communities.
Friends and Family Day was a celebration of what is possible when people come together. It showcased the importance of inclusion, the value of relationships, and the impact of a community that welcomes and supports everyone.
