Happy New Year….Happy Home

Interior Design New Year’s Resolutions

The New Year is a time to reflect, regroup, recharge and REDESIGN. Once those holiday decorations come down, we see our homes in a different light. Besides feeling a little bare, you might notice that your home could really use an update. Not necessarily a remodel, just some TLC or a small makeover. This is the perfect time to take a look around and make some New Year’s Resolutions for your Home. Improving our surroundings influences the way we feel.

Here are Interior Design Resolutions to help you get started.

Take a color risk. Gray will remain the color, but it’s perfectly ok and I encourage you to bring in colors that make you happy! Color can add spark and interest to your home’s interiors so go ahead and play, try some color on for fun this year.

Refresh your decorative accents. A few new pillows or a great art piece can change the look of your room. No need to spend a lot of money, just introducing new patterns, colors and sizes of accessories can give your room an update look.

Less is more. With our minimalist designs these days this statement has been around for awhile. There is truth to it however. Less is more room, less is more clarity, less is well, less cleaning! The start of the New Year is a perfect time to declutter and organize. You will feel fresh and energized!

Know your style. Your Home Style. Are you Traditional, Modern, Urban Industrial? Most don’t really know or just call their style Eclectic to cover all they have pulled together. Make this year the year you want to learn what your style is, or at least what you want it to be. Once you know your Style, you can pull together a plan to create the look and feel that’s ultimately YOU.

Look for new design inspiration. Then go to design sites. Pinterest, Houzz, Instagram are great but try looking elsewhere for cool design ideas. Think travel, trade shows and art events for inspiration, one of a kind items and new design trends.

Introduce RE in your home design. RE paint, Repurpose, Refresh, Refinish. This is a great way to look at reinventing your spaces inexpensively.

Pay attention to details. This is easier said than done, so it will take some practice. Take the time to do the touch up paint around your trim, patch up existing holes when you move that painting to another wall, make sure the painting is hung straight. Fluff pillows and keep flowers fresh (or dust them if you have a brown thumb like me). It’s all the little things that make a big difference when pulling together a room or look.

Treasure Hunt. Antiques stores, estate sales, craigslist, all of these are great places to treasure hunt. You can find amazing one of a kind items, conversation pieces. Often times they just need a little TLC or updating with paint or new hardware.

When you are writing about your upcoming goals, don’t forget about your home! Try one or a few of these resolutions. Bring joy, happiness and beauty into your surroundings this next year. Remember, Happy Home…Happy You!
